La Pauvre Fleur, Victor Hugo (1836)

Acrylic painting on canvas board, 25 x 25 cm / 9.84 in x 9.84 in

This artwork is inspired by Victor Hugo’s poem titled “La Pauvre Fleur.”

It tells the story of a rose in love with a butterfly.
She is rooted and bound to the earth.
He is free and wild, flying from flower to flower as he pleases.

So she gently says to him, "For our love to exist, take root like me, or give me wings like yours."

I chose to interpret the version in which he comes to her and carries her away as they fly together.
