Hi life surfers! How is the ocean of your life today? Quiet? Welcoming? Scary?

Today let's talk about the decision that can change your life: finally deciding to get on that board!

But before we do, and just in case you haven't read other posts on this blog, please note that this blog is not about surfing at all. It's all about life. But I like metaphors, and I think that using surfing as a metaphor of life is pretty cool.

Because surfing is cool.

And you are cool.

Right?

Back to our topic now: if you want to become a surfer, you have to get on that board.

Sounds stupid and very basic, right?

But that's the number one rule.

Spending your time sitting on the beach watching the waves will not magically turn you  into a surfer. Surfing will. (but looking at the waves is a good idea to see if it's the right moment or not).

What's rule number two then?

You're gonna fall.

Yep.

Sorry about that.

But just because you fall doesn't mean it's gonna hurt.

You're just gonna fall. Gracefully maybe. Or not.

That's what beginners do.

And what are you gonna do once you've fallen into the deep ocean?

One very simple thing: you'll jump back on your board and try again.

And it works with absolutely everything you have in mind:

Drawing? Yes... some of your drawings might look...weird at first. But that's art after all, who knows? You might be the next Picasso :-) Keep scribbling!

Dancing? Yes... You will feel like you actually have two brains: one that controls your arms, and one that controls your legs... and both will live their lives independently, not wanting to work together, driving you crazy as you try to coordinate them. That's ok, every beginner has already felt that. Keep dancing!

Piano? Guitar? Same story. Your left hand will not want to collaborate with your right hand at first, but in the end, they will realize that when they play together, magic happens. Keep playing! (Now imagine what drummers probably feel at first)

Life? Life is not a quiet straight road... It's a rollercoaster. Especially when you are in a learning phase. And no, learning is not made for young people only. We ALWAYS learn. So be ok with that and admit it: you are a beginner if you are starting something new. Whatever your age. Wherever you are in this world. Hi  baby learner!

There must be thousands of other exemples like that I could give you but I just want you to keep in mind that in every domain practice is the key.

If something is important to you then just do more of it.

If someone is important to you then talk to her/him more.

Take your fear by the hand and walk this life together.

I like the quote that says that our dreams are waiting on the other side of our fears.

That's so true.

What do you dream about? That's a very interesting question.

If you know the answer then you are lucky: so go and do something today that is going to bring you closer to your dream. In other words: practice.

If you don't know the answer and are the kind of person that has no dream or ambition that's ok.

Try things. Create the spark that will ignite your passion.

Look at the people around you or on social medias: what kind of people do you naturally turn to? Who inspires you? What about real life? How do you like to spend your time?

Now look at the things you CAN do right now with what you already have and start there.

Write a journal, dance in your living room, learn music, read books, draw on a small sketchbook, visit your town, your country, talk to your neighbours...

There are so many things you could do

So please, get on that board today. And get ready to learn. Because that's what's going to happen.

And if you already get on that board in the past and you are scared or tired, get back on it. Hang on, you can do it again. You just have to decide it. Why did you stop? Was it really that hard or did fear stop you? We honest with yourself.

If you want to share your dreams and ideas with me please feel free to do it in the comment or contact me using the contact form on this website. I will be happy to read your words.

From the heart of a dreamer to yours:

Happy surfing!

Joanna
